Where in the Valley is Reed Sparling? (March 2009)

And the ANSWER IS...

Reed Sparling hiding in a mystery parkOur congratulations to Allan Michelin of Wappingers Falls for being the first to respond to the March "Where in the Valley is Reed Sparling" contest. Allan recognized Reed as being at West Point Foundry Preserve (Putnam County).

Nature and history merge seamlessly at West Point Foundry Preserve in Cold Spring, Putnam County. The West Point Foundry located there from 1818 to 1911 was a pacesetter in America’s Industrial Revolution, manufacturing some of the nation’s first steam engines, locomotives and ironclad ships (including parts of the Monitor and Merrimack), as well as pipes for New York City’s water system and Parrott guns—cannon whose accuracy turned the tide of the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln visited the foundry in 1862.

Today Scenic Hudson is working to transform the park into a world-class industrial heritage destination that will tell both the story of the foundry and the land’s remarkable renewal..

Our congratulations to to Allan Michelin of Wappingers Falls for being the first to respond with the correct answer. He won an autographed copy of Reed Sparling's Hudson Valley Voyage: Through the Seasons, Through the Years. Try your luck with our April challenge!
