Perched atop rock outcroppings, the riverside trail at Manitou Point in Garrison, Putnam County, affords sweeping vistas of the Hudson Highlands as well as a refreshing breeze. Named after the Algonquin word for "great spirit," the point also boasts a grand mansion (not open to the public) built in the 1890s for businessman Edward Livingston, descendant of Declaration of Independence signer Philip Livingston. Now owned by Scenic Hudson and the Open Space Institute, the 144-acre property features four miles of paths that are perfect on days when you want to savor the Highlands' rugged beauty without facing a relentless climb -- or crowds.
