How do you identify a brownfield?
Look for signs of potential contamination such as:
- Old, dilapidated buildings
- Broken windows and glass
- Garbage or rubble
- Old barrels or storage tanks
- Old electrical equipment
- Sickly or no vegetation
- Unusual odors
- Oddly-colored soil and/or water
When performing a visual assessment of a site, be sure not to trespass on private property. Take an inventory from a nearby road or public area.
Keep in mind that the characteristics listed above indicate the potential for contamination, but do not automatically mean the site is a brownfield.
Debris indicates the potential for contamination.
